Josephine DeFrancis, (maiden name Hart, Jo Marie) is a contemporary artist born and raised in
Kansas City. She returns to Kansas City after 5 years in New York City pursuing her artistic career
and earning her Masters Degree from Parsons School of Design. Josephine graduated with her MFA
in Studio Art in 2005 where she received a Deans Scholarship and the Oscar Kolin MFA Fellowship.
Upon graduation she was also nominated for a Joan Mitchell Fellowship Grant. Her paintings have
been included in numerous exhibitions in New York City. Most notably she was the youngest winner
of the Curator’s Choice Award in 2003 sponsored by the New York non-profit arts organization Artists
Talk On Art.  She presented her work to the public at the ATOA awards panel and exhibited at the
prestigious Stefan Stux Gallery in Chelsea. Recently in August of 2008 she was nominated and
honored as an inductee to the Cambridge Who’s Who of Executives, Professionals and
Entrepreneurs, recognizing her excellence as a visual artist.

Josephine DeFrancis is also a 2002 BFA graduate of the University of Kansas, Lawrence, in painting
and a 1998 graduate of Blue Valley High School. Her artwork has been seen around the country in
galleries such as Stefan Stux, NYC; White Box, NYC; A.I.R. Gallery, NYC; AWOL Gallery, Brooklyn, NY;
31 Grand Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Neo Studios, NYC; FAB Gallery, Chicago; University of Hawaii; Byron
Cohen Gallery of Contemporary Art, Kansas City; Leedy-Voulkos Art Center, Kansas City; Kansas
City Artists Coalition; among many others. Her paintings were in the juried exhibitions Naked or
Nude in Chicago and the Westmoreland Art Nationals in Pennsylvania. Two of her sculptures were
displayed at the 2002 Golden Key Art International convention in Atlanta, Georgia. Her artwork is in
numerous private collections from India, Austria, Denmark, New York, Kansas City, Florida, and
California. Two notable New York collectors include the editor of “The Daily Show with John Stewart”
and public artist Brian Tolle.

Josephine currently lives and works in Lenexa, KS with her husband and son.
